Cardboard Boat Racing

Yup, it’s that time of year again. Team Flower Power keeping it real, defending our title of best team for cardboard boat demolition.

For those of you who don’t believe me, it’s very possible for cardboard to float. In fact, a nearby town hosts a “get together”, if you will, of cardboard boats and puts on cardboard boat racing, demolition, and other assorted venues of merriment.

And yes. This is my third year being involved with these shenanigans. Our team, Flower Power (originally coming from the friend who introduced the art to me… ‘s sister), has won the demolition derby three years in a row personally, and a fourth if you consider the “Dads” team that won it the year before ours. This year’s competition was held on Saturday, July 25 at the famous Sandy Beach.

Pictures and more info after the break.

Torpeedoh – Buckwild

A friend of mine recently decided to take the plunge and release his latest album of awesome mashups online for free. If you’re unaware what mashups are, Wikipedia has you covered:

A mashup, bootleg or blend (also mash up and mash-up) is a song or composition created by blending two or more songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the music track of another.

It’s some really awesome stuff, and definitely worth a look into. Click the image to go to the download page:

NPR’s Best Music of ’09 (So Far)

Just stumbled upon this list of NPR’s “Best Songs (so far) of 2009”, as voted on by its listeners. While the list is distinctly indie / folk (though, does that really surprise you from NPR?), it’s not too bad.

NPR listeners cast thousands of votes for the year’s best music (so far) and kept the race tight. In the end, Animal Collective edged out every other artist for both Best Album and Best Song. Artists like Grizzly Bear, The Decemberists and Neko Case weren’t far behind. One thing was clear: that 2009 has been one of the strongest years for new music in recent memory.

Skittles

In addition to being an awesome candy substance, it’s also the title of this sweet AMV I found:

Set to “Candy Pop” by Heartsdale ft. Soul’d Out. What I found out most impressive about the music (besides the sweet beat) was the mix of Japanese and English from a Japanese group without sounding Engrishy. The video is also really well done and set to Haruhi! Definitely one of the best AMVs I’ve seen. The weird silence around 0:45 is actually part of the song.

And I realize it’s somewhat old, but I just stumbled on it and loved it, so I thought I’d poast.

Maybe Corporate America Doesn’t Hate Me So Bad…

Got a call-back from a company that I interviewed with earlier during the summer. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to land that particular internship because of scheduling conflicts. They were going to require me to work from 1-5 every afternoon, but I wouldn’t be able to do that because I have a class from 2-5:30 (I think, it’s only half a semester, which accounts for the lengthy lecture time).

Apparently, I was a pretty awesome candidate, as the recruiter called me back earlier today asking me to come in for another interview. The internship this time would be much more flexible in hours, so it’s worth a shot.

Interview’s at 3:30PM on Wednesday, so wish me luck around that time. :-)
